Community-Led Meditation Groups in the SF Bay Area
By Katharine Bierce
MARCH 2020 UPDATE: Many of these groups are now online, due to the coronavirus. Contact each organizer for details.
We all know the saying “I get by with a little help from my friends.”
With the advent of many meditation apps these days, it’s easier than ever to practice at home, alone.
But is that really the whole of the dharma?
The Buddha was once asked by his attendant, Ananda, if spiritual friendship was half of the spiritual life.
The Buddha famously said, no - good friends and noble companions are the whole of the spiritual life.
With that in mind, I’d like to share some meditation groups/dharma events that are specifically community-led. This is great if you want to meet like-minded people, have a space to connect and maybe chat over a meal, or otherwise practice meditation in a community context: not all by yourself.
After all, “This is the whole of the spiritual life,” as the Buddha said. Check out In the Buddha’s Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon edited by Bhikkhu Bodhi, pages 240-241, for an excerpt of the discourse on sangha.
